In 2018, a female orca named Tahlequah (J35) from the Southern Resident Killer Whale population was seen carrying her dead calf for 17 days across more than 1,000 miles of ocean in the Pacific Northwest. According to National Geographic, the calf died shortly after birth, but Tahlequah refused to let go, pushing the body with her head and occasionally lifting it above the surface as she swam with her pod.
According to the Center for Whale Research, this behaviour was interpreted as a “tour of grief,” revealing the emotional depth and social bonds of orcas. Experts noted that the calf had lived for about 30 minutes, giving Tahlequah time to form a brief but meaningful connection. Her mourning was so prolonged that researchers worried for her physical health, but she eventually let go and was later seen swimming actively with her pod.
