DUBAI – [September 14, 2025] In a continuing effort to solidify its position as a global leader in law enforcement technology, the Dubai Police General Headquarters is moving forward with the testing and integration of a new "drone bike," or hoverbike, into its operational fleet. This initiative underscores the force's commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology to enhance response times and accessibility in a rapidly urbanizing landscape.

The vehicle, a battery-powered, vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft developed by California-based manufacturer Hoversurf, is essentially a piloted drone designed for rapid deployment. The primary objective for its use is to serve as a first-responder unit, enabling officers to bypass dense traffic and reach emergency scenes in hard-to-reach areas.

According to a spokesperson for the Dubai Police Artificial Intelligence Department, a team of officers with both motorcycle riding and drone operation experience has commenced pilot training. The department aims to fully integrate these units into service in the near future. The hoverbike, which has a limited top speed of approximately 52 knots (around 96 km/h) and a flight altitude of up to five meters, is capable of a flight time of up to 25 minutes with a pilot on board. When operated remotely in an unmanned capacity, it can remain airborne for a longer duration.

While Dubai is renowned for its fleet of high-performance patrol cars, including luxury brands like Lamborghini and Ferrari, the adoption of the hoverbike represents a shift toward practical, futuristic solutions for urban policing challenges. The hoverbike's design, which meets Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) guidelines in the U.S., does not require a pilot's license for operation, simplifying the training and deployment process.

This innovative step is part of a broader strategic plan by the Dubai Police to integrate artificial intelligence and drone technology into various aspects of law enforcement, including predictive policing and real-time surveillance. The force has also been exploring other robotic and automated systems, further cementing Dubai's reputation as a pioneer in smart city technology.

The partnership with Hoversurf has been a key component of this project, with the manufacturer providing the initial training model and granting the Dubai Police exclusive rights to future orders. This ongoing collaboration is expected to lead to further advancements and a potential expansion of the hoverbike fleet as operational trials continue to yield data on its effectiveness and safety.
