The assassination of conservative activist and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk has become a major national event in the United States, drawing widespread attention and condemnation. Here's a summary of the key details and developments:

Late Charlie Kirk

The Shooting

What happened:Charlie Kirk was shot and killed on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, while speaking at an outdoor event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. He was the first speaker on his "American Comeback Tour."

The event: Kirk was at a debate-style event hosted by his organization, Turning Point USA, speaking to an estimated crowd of 3,000 people. He was sitting under a white tent emblazoned with the slogans "The American Comeback" and "Prove Me Wrong."

The moment of the shooting:A single shot was fired from a distant rooftop, striking Kirk in the neck. Videos from the event show Kirk visibly reacting to the gunshot, clutching his wound, as a large volume of blood gushes from his neck. Panic and chaos immediately erupted as attendees screamed and scattered.

Last moments:At the time of the shooting, Kirk was engaged in a question-and-answer session with an audience member who had asked about gun violence statistics, specifically involving transgender people.

The Manhunt and Investigation

The shooter:Authorities believe the shooter was a lone perpetrator who fired a single round from the roof of the Losee Center building, approximately 125-200 yards away.

Fleeing the scene: Video footage released by the FBI shows a person of interest wearing dark clothing, a hat, and a backpack, running across the roof, climbing down the side of the building, and fleeing into a nearby wooded area.

Evidence found:A high-powered, bolt-action rifle believed to have been used in the attack was recovered in the wooded area. Investigators have also collected a footwear impression, palm print, and forearm imprint from the scene.

No arrests yet:Despite initial, and later retracted, reports from some officials, including the FBI Director, that a suspect had been taken into custody, no one has been arrested in connection with the shooting. The FBI has released multiple images of the person of interest and offered a $100,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Authorities have received thousands of tips and are continuing to investigate.

Political Reactions and Fallout

Condemnation: The assassination has drawn condemnation from across the political spectrum. Utah Governor Spencer Cox called the killing a "political assassination."

Donald Trump's response:President Donald Trump, a close ally of Kirk, announced the news of Kirk's death on social media and later released a video statement from the White House. He praised Kirk as a "martyr for truth and freedom" and announced he would posthumously award him the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Trump has blamed the killing on the "radical left."

Political discourse: The event has reignited a national conversation about political violence and the deeply polarized state of American politics. While there has been bipartisan condemnation of the violence itself, the incident has also led to heightened tensions and accusations on both sides of the political aisle.

Security concerns: The shooting has raised questions about security at political events. The Utah Valley University event had a light police presence, and witnesses noted there were no metal detectors. Following the incident, some political figures have canceled public appearances.
